Heart Beat

I'm six weeks today and this afternoon I had my first ultrasound to view the pregnancy! The technician pointed out the egg sac and the tiny, bean-shaped object that is our developing baby, then she zoomed in to show us the heartbeat, which was a quick, steady flicker on the ultrasound screen. It was incredible and both my husband and I got a little misty-eyed. She also had me hold my breath so she could measure the heartbeat, which was 92 beats a minute. Right now our baby is about 2mm in size, or about the size of a grain of rice.

My doctor was concerned about the possibility of higher order multiples with me, because I hyperstimulated so badly from the fertility drugs, but there seems to be just one pregnancy, which is a relief; I was not looking forward to the possibility of going through selective reduction, so I feel like we dodged a bullet. This also means I should have a low risk pregnancy, which puts me at less risk for C-section, which I would very much like to avoid eight or nine months down the road.

My ovaries are still very enlarged and I still have some fluid in my abdominal cavity, but there is no fluid around my lungs, my left ovary has shrunk considerably, and the remaining follicles on my right ovary are beginning to diminish.

I can't say that I've had any cravings yet, but I haven't been able to stand the taste of chocolate since I was about four weeks pregnant and I've been eating sardines and crackers and guacamole with chips every couple of days. I'd just eat the guacamole with a spoon, but I'm trying to remain civilized about it; I've always liked it, but now I can't get enough!

Fortunately, work has been insane so the days go pretty fast. I just have to hold out until Friday.

I was also going to say, sounds like your body is encouraging you to up the omega-3 fatty acids and calcium; avocados and sardines are rich in these! SO eat all you want, and even from a spoon. :)
