I have to admit that I thought the enhanced sense of taste and smell some pregnant women report developing was a myth or just psychological, but now I believe it: the first bite I took of my cereal convinced me the milk was sour, but my mom tasted it and it seemed fine to her. Still, she bought a new gallon, so I poured out a little and tasted it, but it also tastes sour to me - not overtly wretched, but like the milk is just going bad. I'd been trying to get more dairy since we began trying to conceive, but I'll be switching back to soy milk, because it still tastes like it should. At least for now.

I'm also going to eat as much fish as I want to, because after reading all the studies conducted on mercury in fish, I'm not convinced that it's dangerous to me or the developing fetus; there has been only a few documented cases of mercury poisoning in the twentieth century and those are associated with industrial sites in Japan. Furthermore, recent studies have indicated that women who eat three or more servings of fish a week give birth to babies with better cognitive development than those who eat less fish. I'm still not going to eat the predator fish, like shark and sail fish, that may have high levels of mercury in their bodies, but I'm not going to worry about eating sushi once a week or about my sardines and crackers, either.

I don't think Japanese women worry about eating sushi during pregnancy and I'm pretty sure my Aunt Ann Marie ate as much herring, smoked or pickled or otherwise, as she wanted when she was pregnant with my cousins.
