Carl was offered a job today. To work in Dubai for two years.
We're going to discuss it further when he gets home, but right now I don't know just what to think, except that this is an opportunity we probably can't afford to pass up.
Wow. Would you go along? Dubai is actually a very secular place. It's the marketplace for the world, really, and Westerners aren't hassled (or so I hear). But then you've just bought a house too so what a decision to make!
We're not quite sure if I would go along or not. If I did go, we would have to procure off-site housing for me, which is fairly expensive (comparable to London), but with the salary he'd be earning we would be able to afford rent and a mortgage, so it's possible, and because we'd have a new baby I would really hate to be in America while Carl was in the UAE. However, we'd also have a new house and would have to make arrangements for all our pets, which would definitely mean giving up the ferrets and probably some of the cats if I stayed for the entire two year contract. We're thinking right now that I would come over for several months at a time with the baby, but otherwise manage life back home, which would be especially important during hurricane season when it might be necessary to board up the house, evacuate the pets, turn off the utilities, etc.
From what I've heard you might get your butt pinched and be stared at if you wear shorts or a spaghetti strap top, but it's also one of the safest places to live in the world (unless you're crossing the street or driving!). A woman isn't expected to cover her hair, but it seems to be a good idea to wear fairly loose, long sleeves and a long skirt, which would really be more comfortable for the incredible heat and humidity, as well.
