My mom and I were out sometime during the week (Thursday, I think)looking for decorations for the wedding reception and we, of course, eventually wound up in Big Lots, which is where our shopping trips almost always lead us. We weren't there for anything in particular, although she did buy me some household items, but what we did find that interested me was yarn! I mentioned that I always wanted to learn-- especially after I saw my Aunt Joye whip up a pretty, blue scarf in a matter of minutes when I was last summer!-- and she helped me pick out some yarn and, later on, she bought me two pairs of knitting needles and a book about knitting entitled Beginner's Guide to Knitting, by Alison Dupernex; it seems like it will be a handy guide once I have some clue what I'm doing, but it is not at all for someone totally unfamiliar with knitting! I would never recommend it to another beginning knitter.
The book was no help at all, but fortunately I have a friend who knits who was able to give me some advice and link me to a lot of helpful websites. I've also found help from a beginner's knitting community here at LJ:
novice_knitters. After repeatedly trying to properly tie a slipknot, I figured that out, and today I practiced casting-on with two needles to the point where I feel fairly confident with it; I actually have one knitting needle with a bunch of neatly-done stitches on it!
Now, I just need to figure out the actual knitting part of all this! One of the knitter's in Novice_Knitters recommends patience and practice, which is definitely good advice, especially since I'm usually pretty impatient.
I guess this is a boring update, but I'm really into this whole knitting thing at the moment. :D
